Research. Data. Teaching.

John Curiel, Ph.D.

I am a  Senior Research Analyst with YouGov’s Survey Research Group. I earned my PhD in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in August of 2019, specializing in American politics, with a minor subfield in Methodology. I spent two years as research director with the MIT Elections Data and Science Lab (MEDSL), followed by three years as an assistant professor of political science with Ohio Northern University.

I research how electoral institutions mediate the fairness and integrity of elections and ensuing representation. To date I have published on the fields of redistricting and representation, political communication, and public health. I proposed a novel measure of representational harms due to splitting ZIP codes via gerrymandering within the Election Law Journal, which also placed third in the Common Cause Gerrymandering Competition. I likewise extended my work on redistricting harms to descriptive representation in the Journal of Race, Ethnicity and Politics. I followed up with methodological published work with Political Analysis, and applied my expertise within election administration and political geography to quantify the electoral harms arising from racial disparities in poll closures arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. I have likewise published my work in popular outlets such as Real Clear Politics and the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage, where my work rebutting claims of electoral fraud in Bolivia was the fourth most read article in 2020.
